Speech Production, Imaging, and Neuroscience Lab 

The goal of the SPIN lab is to study the behavioral and neural mechanisms responsible for speech-motor control in disordered speech and how they may differ from those with typically developing speech. We are specifically interested in researching those with developmental disorders, like speech-sound disorder or autism spectrum disorder, and neurodegenerative disorders, like ataxia.

We use behavioral, acoustical, and imaging methods to see differences in speech production. We use behavioral measures, such as asking participants to repeat a sentence or tell a story, to assess their speech and language. Acoustic methods include recording the participant's speech and analyzing its acoustic properties. Our imaging techniques include functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) of the brain as well as an ultrasound of the oral cavity.
